HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DREADLOCK WIGS

Shedding of Synthetic Wigs is completely normal, this isn't a fault. Excessive brushing will result in loss of strands - it will also create tangles. Please use a detangling brush and always hold the hair at the root when brushing and brush gently - with the right care your synthetic wig will last a long time.

PRO TIP

If your faux locs are too shiny you may use dry shampoo to remove any unwanted shine at the roots.

Work out any extra shampoo in the clean water and remove your faux locs gently pat your wig to dry with a towel

Leave your locks wig to dry - ideally on a folding wig stand or mannequin

The Intriguing World of Dreadlocks: History, Significance, and Care

Dreadlocks, often simply called dreads or locs, are more than just a hairstyle. They are a symbol packed with historical significance, cultural depth, and personal expression. This distinctive hair formation, characterized by matted coils of hair, transcends mere fashion, embedding itself deeply in the realms of spirituality, politics, and identity. Let’s unravel the fascinating story of dreadlocks, explore their cultural significance, and learn how to care for them.

Historical Roots

The history of dreadlocks is as tangled as the hair itself, with roots stretching back to ancient civilizations. Evidence of dreadlocked hairstyles has been found in various cultures across the globe, from the Sadhus of India, ancient Egyptians, and Sufi ascetics to the Maasai people of East Africa and the Rastafarians of Jamaica. This wide geographic and cultural spread underscores the universal appeal and adaptability of dreadlocks.

Ancient Egypt and Africa

In ancient Egypt, mummies have been discovered with dreadlocks, suggesting a historical precedent for this hairstyle dating back thousands of years. Similarly, in various African tribes, dreadlocks were a sign of spiritual status, wisdom, and the connection to the divine.

India and the Sadhus

In India, dreadlocks have a profound spiritual significance among Sadhus, or holy men, who renounce worldly life. Their matted hair symbolizes their detachment from vanity and materialistic aspects of life, embodying their spiritual journey.

Rastafarian Movement

Perhaps the most globally recognized association of dreadlocks is with the Rastafarian movement. For Rastafarians, dreadlocks are a symbol of the Lion of Judah, strength, and an explicit connection to their African heritage. They are also a manifestation of a vow of separation from Babylon, which represents the oppressive western society.

Cultural Significance

Across different cultures, dreadlocks carry varying meanings, from spiritual enlightenment and a vow of strength to a symbol of rebellion against conventional norms of beauty and society. They are a powerful form of self-expression and identity, often worn with pride to signify one’s heritage, spirituality, or personal journey.

Caring for Dreadlocks

Maintaining dreadlocks requires dedication and proper care to keep them healthy and neat. Here are some essential tips for dreadlock care:

  • Washing: Use residue-free shampoo to prevent buildup in your locs. Washing frequency varies based on personal preference and scalp needs, but generally, once every 1-3 weeks is recommended.
  • Drying: Thoroughly dry your dreadlocks after washing to prevent mold or mildew from forming. Air drying is best, but you can gently squeeze excess water with a towel.
  • Retwisting: Regular retwisting helps keep dreadlocks neat, but overdoing it can lead to thinning and breakage. Aim for retwisting every 4-6 weeks.
  • Moisturizing: Keep your scalp and dreadlocks moisturized with natural oils like coconut or jojoba oil to prevent dryness and breakage.
  • Professional Maintenance: Occasionally, seeing a professional who specializes in dreadlock care can be beneficial, especially for repairs or styling.

Dreadlocks are a testament to the diverse ways in which humans express their identity, spirituality, and resistance through their physical appearance. They remind us of the rich tapestry of cultures and histories that we come from and the powerful statements we can make without saying a word. Whether you wear them for personal, spiritual, or aesthetic reasons, understanding the history and significance of dreadlocks can deepen the connection to this unique and profound hairstyle.
